Tsavorite

Technically it is a green grossularite, a species of the garnet family of minerals. Chemically, this gemstone is a calcium aluminum-silicate deriving its rich green color from vanadium and chromium. This rare green variety of grossularite is called Tsavorite, deriving its name from the Tsavo National Park in Kenya, so famous for its great elephants and man-eating lions that terrorized the railway workers during the building of "The Lunatic Line", from Mombasa to Uganda, just before the turn of the century.

Modern mineralogical nomenclature dictates that the naming of a mineral must end with "ite", and as Tsavo was the obvious locality choice, Mr. Platt of Tiffany & Co. named the magnificent fiery green gemstone "Tsavorite".
